Top news: In a speech at the National Defense University, U.S. President Barack Obama attempted to address criticism of his administration's antiterrorist efforts, announcing that he would cut back on the use of armed drones and again attempt to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. Obama also called on Congress to pass a new Authorization to Use Military Force against al Qaeda. "Unless we discipline our thinking, our definitions, our actions, we may be drawn into more wars we don't need to fight, or continue to grant Presidents unbound powers more suited for traditional armed conflicts between nation states."
Obama was at one point heckled by Madea Benjamin, co-founder of the anti-war group Code Pink, who called on Obama to close Guantanamo Bay immediately and criticized the 2011 killing of U.S. citizen Abdulrahman al-Awlaki by a U.S. drone in Yemen.
"The voice of that woman is worth paying attention to," Obama said in response. "Obviously I do not agree with much of what she said, and obviously she wasn't listening to me and much of what I said. But these are tough issues, and the suggestion that we can gloss over them is wrong."
