Georgians curse 'tunnel of misfortune'

The Georgian Times is running a piece today on the history of the Roki Tunnel, which runs beneath the Caucasus mountains connecting South Ossetia and Russia. As one of the only routes connecting North and South Ossetia, the tunnel was critical in Russia's ability to launch its counterattack into Georgia on Aug. 8.

Georgians long resisted the construction of the tunnel during the Soviet period, fearful of an influx of North Ossetians into Georgia, but the project was finally greenlit in the early 1990s by Georgia's first communist party secretary and later president Eduard Shevardnadze. The Georgian Times notes:

Shevardnadze perhaps did not imagine, when signing off the Roki project, what a fatal role this tunnel would play in the history of Georgia."

It's still unclear to me why the Georgian military was unable to block the tunnel during their initial incursion into South Ossetia. President Saakashvili claims that this was part of the plan and troops simply did not reach the tunnel in time. But the Georgian air force has fighter jets and helicopters and it seems possible that they could have attacked the tunnel from the air at the same time, or even before the ground assault on Tskhinvali, perhaps delaying the Russian counterattack long enough to better establish their position. Georgia tried (unsuccessfully) to blow up the tunnel during the civil war in 1991 so it's not like this is a new idea.

Any readers with a military background care to weigh in?

Morons

One doesn't need a military background to know (as you do) that the Roki tunnel should have been, and easily could have been, blocked by Georgian troops as soon as they initiated their artillery and infantry assault on South Ossetia. I guess Military Science is like Political Science -- makes no sense, and isn't scientific at all.

SU 25

There's a mistake in this story: Georgia does not have fighter jets at all. Su-17 jets are not operational, and Su-25 jet is a ground attack aircraft, but not a fighter. Russians reportedly are patrolling air over Caucasus with a few fighters in air on a 24/7 basis, making air assault impossible. Georgians tried to block Roki tonnel with heavy artillery shelling on morning of August 8, trying to block Zara road, that begins in this tonnel. During this artillery shelling, and subsequent attack by ground forces, Russians had the biggest number of casualties (nearly 30 dead, but not approved), including major Denis Vetchinov, and a lot of injured personnel including Leutenant General Khrulev (commander of 58th army). This attack made Russians to concentrate near the village of Java (this village became an attack base for Russians and Ossetian Militia to begin Tskhinvali assault, Ossetian leader Kokoyty have fled to this village after the initial siege of Tskhinvali on the morning of August 8th) and to protect the South-Ossetian entrance to the Roki tonnel. Russian side reported, that during the days of war there was an assault (after initial artillery shelling) of georgian 8-people team to the ossetian end of Roki tunnel, and there was a misinformation/gossip on August 9th about the explosion in this tunnel.
