Is Ireland going dry?

Say it ain't so:

Ireland's drinks industry is suffering from withdrawal with pubs closing at the rate of one a day, as the party years of the Celtic Tiger boom become a blurred memory. The economic downturn allied to a changing drinking culture has led to 400 pubs closing over the past year, according to Michael Patten, chairman of the drinks industry representative body.

Bad news

On a recent visit to Ireland I encountered a Guinness maintenance guy on the sidewalk. They drive around the country in little trucks to all the pubs and clean the tap lines, to make sure the product is pure. I thanked him for his efforts, because I love Guinness. He said that there should be more people like me, 'cuz business was down. But I didn't realize it was so bad. The Irish pubs are good not only for their Guinness but for their music, just regular townspeople who come in every night and play sweet music, which elevates them in this respect from their British cousins across the Irish Sea. So this news is doubly bad.
