Despite all the talk about immigration flows reversing during the Great Recession, a new Immigration Handbook from the George W. Bush Institute notes that in term of absolute numbers, the U.S. foreign-born population is the highest its ever been at 40.4 million. As a percentage of the population, shown in the graph above, it's at 13 percent -- nearing the 1910 peak of 14.7 percent. 

Latin Americans are the largest group of immigrants, but Asians are the fastest growing.
